The City of Richland Center is seeking a full-time Director of Public Works (DPW). As the department head, this position is accountable for managing planning, organizing, and directing the operational activities of the departments under their direction, including streets, buildings and grounds, airport, cemetery, and parks. To ensure the city’s mission of providing the safe, efficient, and effective delivery of public works services to the community, the DPW will work closely with other city officials, personnel, and external stakeholders.

This position requires a highly adaptable, humble, and solution-oriented leader to perform complex supervisory and administrative work. The director will prioritize communication and relationship building with all municipal personnel and officials, community partners, and the general public. The director will build a high-functioning team through active coaching and mentorship.  

The director will also provide back up support to their team during peak operational periods. This will include various duties related to landfill operations, snow removal, and maintenance of public assets.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, planning, public administration, or a related field.
  • Five to seven years’ experience in public works management, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license without infractions.
  • Knowledge of public works operations, infrastructure maintenance, and construction practices.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to public works, municipal operations, and environmental compliance.
  • Ability to develop and manage budgets, prioritize projects, and make sound decisions.
  • When not on a pre-arranged vacation, available to be called out on a 24-hour basis and must reside within a 30-minute response time.

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Starting salary of $70,000+ per year based on qualifications.
