Click it or Ticket

Press Release
May 5, 2017

The Richland Center Police Department and Richland County Sheriff’s Department will team up with hundreds of law enforcement agencies throughout Wisconsin for the Click it or Ticket safety belt enforcement mobilization from May 22nd through June 4th. This includes the heavily travelled Memorial Day Weekend.

According to Chief of Police Lucas Clements “Our objective during the Click it or Ticket mobilization is not to write more tickets but to save lives and reduce injuries through voluntary compliance with Wisconsin’s mandatory safety belt law. However, if voluntary compliance fails, we will enforce the law.”

According to the Wisconsin Bureau of Transportation Safety, Wisconsin’s overall safety belt use rate is approximately 86%, which is the all-time high for the state but still lower than the national average of 88%.

Motorist who are hurt or killed in traffic crashes because they didn’t buckle up create tremendous economic losses, estimated at nearly $1.8 billion in Wisconsin in 2013. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the rest of society pays nearly 75% of these economic losses through higher insurance premiums, taxes and other public funding.

Consistent safety belt use is the single most effective protection against being ejected from a vehicle or thrown around violently inside during a crash and possibly hitting another vehicle occupant with massive force.

“Far too many people are killed or injured needlessly because they were not buckled up.” said Richland County Sheriff Jim Bindl. “Our ultimate goal is to reduce the number of preventable traffic deaths and injuries. That’s why we urge you to buckle up every time you get behind the wheel or ride in a vehicle.”

Chief Clements and Sheriff Bindl want to remind motorists that as of June 30, 2009 Wisconsin has a primary enforcement seatbelt law which allows an officer to stop and ticket a driver for not wearing a seatbelt just like any other traffic stop. Officers no longer need some other violation in order to stop the vehicle.
